Young JW murdered

got the news through the week that a victim of a fatal bashing was a 22-year old jw.

apparently he was a very soft and fragile sort of a guy, but when his group confronted by another leaving the movies he got pushed/hit and hit his head on the ground.

he sufferd brain damage and later died.. a very sad event for everyone who knew him and i'm sure it somthing of regret for everyone that an apparently decent guy was so unexpectedly killed just going to the movies at the local cinima.. here's a local news report: http://www.thewest.com.au/20020207/news/state/tw-news-state-home-sto43432.html

WT Advance Directive - Just the Facts

there is substantial discussion of this topic in a previous thread that contains the opinions, some informed - some not, regarding the validity of the directive.

i believe that a useful place to begin is by reviewing the medical literature.

Hi anewperson: Your comments are silly and show your ignorance.

1. There is obvioulsy NO duress. It may be peer pressure, there might be enforcable sanctions for non-compliance, people may feel under a looming threat for either not signing or not carrying their card but there's no law against any of that. WTS could say it's just 'friends helping friends'. Given you've raised this before, I think your misunderstanding is deliberate.

2. What makes you think Dr's aren't aware of the issues? This issue is a regular in peer-reviewed medical journals and that's where Dr's go for their info - obviously you don't. AFAIK, that's where AJWRB concentrate their efforts.

But it's good we're at least commenting on the issue.

Notice the tick-a-box for Elders, Special Pios etc being DF? In my old circut we had the insane outcome of two consecutive COs being DF while on our circut. (I'm serious and I'm not joking.)

They were both guys I really liked too.

British Food.

ok all you non-brits, tell us how you love/hate our british cuisine.. 1. roast potato's.. 2. liver and onions.. 3. yorkshire pudding.. 4. devilled kidneys.. 5. steak and kidney pie.. 6. fish and chips.. 7. breast of pigeon.. 8. vindaloo.. 9. roast lamb.. 10. stilton blue cheese.. englishman.. bring on the dancing girls!

1. Roast potato's (sic)- In my version I microwave the spuds, coat with olive oil and maybe some herbs and/or spices, then finish in the BBQ for 45min - Devine

2. Liver and onions - Ugrghh... no I don't go for organs... reminds me of the bloke I met over there who caught hedgehogs in the street, boiled them in their blood and made gravy out of the remaining liquid... No wonder the elders didn't let him get dunked... Notice that delicacy didn't make the list of British fare...

3. Yorkshire pudding - Yeah, my grandmother made them... don't mind one occasionally on roast night at the Tavern

4. Devilled kidneys.- Bluughh... But that's a childhood aversion

5. Steak and kidney pie. - so is maggot and offal in a bag - don't mind a chicken & veggie pie though

6. Fish and chips - my favourte comfort food. Best with a side serve of KFC Coldslaw

7. Breast of pigeon. - never gone for the game meats, havn't tried pigon though. I would try swan.

8. Vindaloo. Well, goodness gracious me... Food of the gods... though I haven't had a British version...

9. Roast lamb. I rate sheep meat very lowly as my mother used to fry to death the very cheapest mutton chops at home. That vile smell has haunted me ever since... But roast pork or beef - yeah... that's excellent

Power, corruption, religion & politics

i find it amusing but disconcerting to see the blinders on people's eyes when it comes to politics.

here we are, most of us having been jws, but now we are fully aware of the corruption of the wts, yet we are blind to the same thing happening in politics.

this is especially true of the more conservative members among us.

Their practices are the stuff right wing extremists dream of - I can only imagain how similar to WTS/JW the rest of the world would be if the American Right had their way.

Hi sixofnine - Thanks for your note, I've edited my post to clarify why I take it the officers thought there could be a case to build. I corrected the uniform line too.

Even though I doubt much or all of the story anyhow, according to it they did, IMO, present themselves as officers, as Dave seems to acknoledge when he said the elder could have reacted to: 'A big ugly cop (sorry Darryl) getting in your face?

My problem would be that if, as you point out (and I think correctly), the WTS uses the legal system with some level of sophistication then people who identify themselves as upholders of the law should recognise that they (and the cause they [perhaps unknowingly] represent) are in some legal jepordy when they tackle issues like this.

It strikes as chest-puffing, not a thought out strategy to get to the truth of anything. It hands the WTS an easy victory with which to further build their case for legal invincibility.

It's one thing to yell and scream and shout, it's another to get a job done. That's what I expect of cops who present themselves as cops.

All this just damages the credibility of the story, IMO.

Hi All - I'd expect a trained cop suspecting a major sex crime and a consipracy to conceal it, to seek an arrest and conviction. Unless I've misunderstood all this convoluted, emotive story, I don't belive it for one second.

I say the cops suspected a crime because Danni's opening line was:

I want to get straight to the point and ask about children being molested, parents being discoraged from reporting the crimes to the police and women being raped and warned they talk they will be kicked out of the organization. Would you please address those allegations one at time?

It seems that they made a personal point, but didn't get far in building a case. If I were a DA or Detective or state Governer (Texas or Florida???) and woke on Wednesday morning to news that a court had issued a 'gag order' on officers with 'evidence' like that, I'd be mighty pissed with the officers (as it happens, this is convenient for the story's sponsor as is his 'need' to keep details 'secret')

Either they were doing a police job (in which case they stuffed up big time), or they were doing a personal job while conducting themselves as officers?

I say they presented themselves as officers because Daryl said:

Let's get one thing straight here before you start quoting the law to us. In the course of a general investigation of a suspected or reported crime, a police officer may stop and question any persons whom he believes may have information about the event.

It's got to be personal or business - not a blend. If they did go for a blend, maybe they should shut up about it - their boss should be very displeased with the outcome.

If I were at Dateline and got the story presented here, I'd be either sending it down to Hard Copy or building a story on Police incompetance.

refiners fire asked a reasonable question, but I think draws the wrong conclusion from it:

Imagine your a cop. Youre going to a meeting about child molestation. You walk into a cold. empty. dark hall. you go into a back room and theres 3 guys in suits. plus, a secret observer on a speaker box,who weighs in with legal opinion.

What I'd expect a cop to do it withdraw, get back-up, get legal advice, involve trained major crime investigators and do everything to win an arrest and conviction.

On the basis of what's been writtten, it's got the same level of credibility to me as the 'GB member' on H2O did a couple of years ago.

Max - who tires of this kind of nonsense very quickly...

Are Jehovah's Witnesses evil?

i am shocked at the many accusations against jehovah's witnesses in this forum.. i know that i am young, but most of my family are jws and they are good people and i love them.

even my worldly family is very nice and i do not shun them.

the friends in the hall are very nice also.

'Likable misfits' - that's the kindest accurate description I've come across for JWs. It's a place where people can belong and live a whole life in just a slightly different realm to the rest of us, a differnt set of rules for a differnet set of people - not evil, just dealing(high-handedly??) with the difficulties of being differnet and not fitting in (I think).

(Although a small minority do commit acts that are or seem evil)

1. Voting
2. Buying lotto tickets
3. Fornicating with my wife (tongue causes trouble, again!)
4. Denying the existence of God
5. Joining a political party
6. Associating with Apostates (and being one I guess)
7. Watching porn with my wife (and without her sometimes...)

BIG DEAL!!!! Apart from a JC, Who'd care???? I think we make a richer and more complete contribution to life by thinking about what and why we are and deciding what to do, think and say. Even if others don't like everything we do.

If the JWs can't tolerate divergence in their community, I truly regret that they don't have the good grace to just let people grow apart from them without all the unpleasantness. Too often enough of their senior-people act like pumped-up roosters pecking the hens into order (works with chicken sized brains) to really turn away less compliant and conservative folk.

I just felt like sharing my regret over 'the kind of [miserable] man I was' (apologies to Paul, I think it was) 3 years ago. I'd be interested if anyone wanted to reply with his or her own comments or thoughts or experiences or anything...
